Homework Crisis at CRMS?

by Dennis Duran, Kevin Benda, & Carlos J. Vasquez

The crisis at CRMS is students not turning in homework. Some teachers just don't give homework. This is a serious problem. The jobs that pay well are expecting for people to take work and finish it at home and at night. The teachers when they don't give out homework aren't teaching students good work ethics.

This problem is not a laughing matter. Most of these students will probably drop out during high school. This means that half of the jobs will be shut off from them. Many people have different opinions about homework but the students have little hope.

The teachers from seventh grade like Mrs. Moore do assign homework. She assigns homework tos tudents so they can have reinforcement for the skills taught that day. Twenty-five percent of the students in Mrs. Moore class turn in their homework. She says "Students don't do their work because they're lazy or don't have time to understand it." Some seventh grade students get homework from five different classes. "My math teacher assigns the most homework," says one student. He still does his homework, but can't finish the other homework assignments. It really depends on how much time he has. He believes that parent punishment is what will make him do homework.

Mrs. Sundeen, an 8th grade language arts teacher, is one of the many teachers that assign homework. She gives homework for reinforcement. She also agrees that homework should be mandatory. Only about 20 percent of the students turn in their homework. Mrs. Sundeen says that the students don't turn in their work because they're lazy. They don't think homework is important.

We did a survey on students and most of the students have homework from five teachers. They may get most of their homework from the language arts and math teachers. They might get it done, but they forget about their other teachers. Many of these students think that failing grades or the threat of Saturday School would make them do their work.

Are the sixth graders doing any better? Are the sixth grade teachers any worse or better? Ms. Andrews assigns homework. About 95% of the students turn in their homework in Ms. Andrews calss. She also believes that homework should be mandatory. The other 5% don't turn it in because they are lazy. Some sixth graders have homework from all seven classes. They say that social studies assigns the most homework. Most sixth graders do turn it in. They do it because they can. They also think that Saturday School would make them do all their work.

Camino students who don't do their homework don't have much hope after middle school. Many of these students will probably drop out of high school. Students should turn in their homework so they learn good work ethics. If students don't do homework, then they will not get a decent job. Their hopes and dreams will be crushed. This is just sad and disappointing. Camino has many good teens, but they will lose much hope without homework.

"Homework crisis at CRMS"
Wow this was very well thought out. Loved the statistics in there, and it shows that you guys really took the time and effort to write this. Very good! Hopfully this will have an impact on the kids who have enough time to do things they shouldnt be rather then doing their homework. If the wont listen to their teachers or parents maybe they will listen to their peers! You guys will def. make an impact! keep up the good work!

Ok so i was reading this and i do belive that without homework we will crash and fail that is true. But if you think about it after school we may have things going on so we can't do our homework. We may have problems with parents or family emergences. We may be lazy though too. To me homework isn't important and if I really understand the work we did in class I don't do it. It is a waist of time to do things that I already understand. We should bring back advisory so kids have a chance to get rid of some of the homework they have in other clases so when we go home there isn't that much more to do, but that is just my opinion.

Homework has always been a problem for kids. Most of the kids who don't do their homework don't understand how it will affect them in the future. They are focused on the present time and looking "cool" with their friends. Threats from teachers work well with sixth graders, but as the students move on to seventh and eighth grade, they stop caring. To get kids to do their homework, teachers have to find a new way of reinforcement. I'm an eighth grader, and I've seen students who don't care what grades they get or how many lunch detentions they attend. Solving the homework problem cannot be done as a mass change. The kids who do their homework don't enjoy having to get held back in class because some students refuse to learn the material. If teachers would create a plan that was made for the individual, I think that the work average would increase. They also have to understand that kids who don't want to learn WON'T. They can't be forcing them to do assignments when they could be helping someone who wants to learn, but is confused.

I somewhat agree that there should be homework in school. However, I believe that teachers should know when its too much or when students need a break from it.

I'm amazed at how well thought out these responses are! As a teacher, it's really disappointing to assign homework so kids will understand a concept the next day in class and have half the class not do it. Then the kids who did the homework have to sit through a review session that is boring them to tears. It's like they're getting punished for doing their work!

The worse is when I assign a rough draft as homework so that the next day we can revise it as a class. If the kids don't do the rough draft, then they don't get the revision and THEN their final draft is nowhere as good as the other kids. I wish everyone would just do their homework and make it easier on all of us.

That stinks because the drop out rate in the U.S. is becoming higher and higher and I know some kids don't like homework but in real life homework is a must.

This was a good piece of work. you guys did well on your research but i dont know if im in favor for this "more homework' thing. one thing to look at is to never make an asumption about the reader. You put down that they will probably drop out of high school. well if you use the word probably the reader will think you dont no wat your talking about and put down the article. Never asume the type of person your reader is!

THis article is cool and i think you should keep rocking. People should get their butts working and getting work done. THey should think for them selfs and what other will think of them. They probably do it to be cool or something.
